Over the past year, our Lab Sustainability Initiative has grown into a practical platform helping laboratories across Africa reduce waste, improve resource efficiency, and make smarter sustainability choices.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Below are key milestones, practical lessons, and on‑demand sustainability resources you can use or share with your teams.
The Lasec® Lab Sustainability Initiative launched in early 2025 to provide structured guidance on:
These pillars guide laboratories toward greener science practices. See our Lab Sustainability Portfolio for more details.
Throughout the year, we hosted a series of sessions focused on reducing emissions, cutting plastic use, and optimising resource efficiency. All webinars are now available on demand for teams looking to revisit any of the material.
Two institutions were highlighted this year for their work in sustainable science:
Synexa Life Sciences
Synexa Life Sciences was the first laboratory in Africa to achieve Green-level My Green Lab Certification. Their team implemented measurable changes in material management and energy use.
UCT Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IDM)
The UCT Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IDM) was the first academic research institute in Africa to reach the same certification level. They shared details of internal systems updates and behavioural shifts that supported this outcome.
From waste segregation to workflow redesign, these stories help answer:
“How can a lab start becoming more sustainable today?”

In 2025, we expanded our range of products to include options designed to support lower environmental impact. These included:
These products help labs lower environmental impact without sacrificing performance. Procurement teams seeking data on impact can request specifications from their Lasec® representative at sales@lasec.com.
Guidance on sustainable laboratory procurement is available from My Green Lab
Lasec® was recognised as a Channel Partner for the ACT Ecolabel by My Green Lab. Through this global partnership, we help laboratories:
This partnership enhances transparency and trust in sustainable purchasing.
We appreciate the laboratories, speakers, and suppliers who:
Your collaboration makes the science community more resilient and greener.

In 2026, we plan to continue supporting laboratories across Africa by expanding resources, sharing case examples, and responding to emerging challenges in sustainable science.
We welcome your input on what you’d like to see covered in future posts. If you have suggestions, questions, or would like to share your experience with lab sustainability, please leave a comment below. Your insights help inform the direction of this initiative.
