Product Overview

The Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test Swab is a single-use device for sampling surfaces and equipment as part of a hygiene monitoring programme. Each swab is pre-moistened with a cationic agent that lifts residual soil and releases adenosine triphosphate (ATP) from any intact cells present on the sampled surface.

Once a sample has been collected, activating the device brings the swab into contact with a reagent held in the test cuvette. The resulting bioluminescent reaction produces light in proportion to the amount of ATP present, giving a direct indication of the degree of surface contamination. Results are read on a Neogen Clean-Trace® LM1 Luminometer and expressed in Relative Light Units (RLU): the higher the RLU value, the greater the residual contamination.

The test is designed for rapid, real-time verification of cleaning effectiveness rather than for identifying specific microorganisms. It requires minimal operator training and is suited to routine incorporation into HACCP and broader food safety and sanitation programmes across food processing, foodservice, and other regulated environments.

Key Features

  • Pre-moistened swab head for consistent sample collection
  • Single-use, ready-to-use test device requiring no additional reagent handling

Frequently Asked Questions about the Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test Swab

Q: What is the Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test Swab?

A: The Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test Swab is a single-use surface hygiene monitoring device designed to detect adenosine triphosphate (ATP) remaining on surfaces and equipment after cleaning.

Q: What does the Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test Swab detect?

A: The test detects ATP collected from the sampled surface. ATP can indicate residual organic material and biological contamination, making it useful for verifying cleaning effectiveness.

Q: What is the main application of the Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test Swab?

A: It is designed for surface hygiene monitoring, including verification of cleaning and sanitation effectiveness on food-contact surfaces, processing equipment and other monitored surfaces.

Q: How does the Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test Swab work?

A: The surface is sampled with the pre-moistened swab. After sampling, the device is activated so the collected material contacts the reagent in the test cuvette. A bioluminescent reaction then produces light in proportion to the ATP present.

Q: Why is the Clean-Trace® swab pre-moistened?

A: The swab is pre-moistened with a cationic agent designed to lift residual soil and release ATP from intact cells present on the sampled surface.

Q: How are Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test results reported?

A: Results are expressed in Relative Light Units (RLU) when the activated test device is read using the compatible Clean-Trace® LM1 Luminometer.

Q: What does a higher RLU result indicate?

A: A higher RLU value indicates a greater amount of residual contamination detected by the ATP test. Results should be interpreted according to the hygiene monitoring limits established for the facility.

Q: Does the Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test identify specific microorganisms?

A: No. The test is designed for rapid verification of cleaning effectiveness through ATP detection; it does not identify specific microorganisms.

Q: What reader is required for the Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test Swab?

A: The test requires the Clean-Trace® LM1 Luminometer to measure the bioluminescent reaction and report the result in RLU. The luminometer is sold separately.

Q: Is the Clean-Trace® LM1 Luminometer included with the ATP swabs?

A: No. The Clean-Trace® LM1 Luminometer is sold separately and is required to read the Surface ATP Test results.

Q: Does the Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test require additional reagents?

A: The test is supplied as a ready-to-use device with a pre-moistened swab and reagent cuvette, so no additional reagent handling is required as part of the described test format.

Q: Is the Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test reusable?

A: No. Each Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test is a single-use device intended for one sampling and testing procedure.

Q: How quickly are results available?

A: The test is designed to provide results within seconds of reading on the Clean-Trace® LM1 Luminometer, supporting rapid hygiene assessment and corrective action.

Q: Can the Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test be used to verify cleaning effectiveness?

A: Yes. A primary application is verification of cleaning and sanitation effectiveness on food-contact, processing and other monitored surfaces.

Q: Can the Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test be incorporated into a HACCP programme?

A: Yes. The test is suitable for routine hygiene monitoring as part of HACCP and broader food safety and sanitation programmes.

Q: Where can Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Tests be used?

A: The supplied product information identifies applications in food processing, foodservice and other regulated environments where rapid verification of surface hygiene is required.

Q: What is the reproducibility of the Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test?

A: The supplied product information specifies greater than 90% reproducibility across repeat testing.

Q: How many Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test devices are supplied in a pack?

A: The pack configuration contains 100 test devices, packaged as 10 devices per foil pouch.

Q: Why are the Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Tests packaged in foil pouches?

A: The devices are packaged in units of 10 within individual foil pouches to support extended shelf integrity.

Q: How should Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test Swabs be stored?

A: The specified storage temperature is 4–8°C (40–46°F).

Q: What are the package dimensions of the Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test Swabs?

A: The package measures approximately 28.20 × 16.00 × 13.00 cm.

Q: What is the package weight?

A: The package weighs approximately 0.98 kg (2.16 lb).

Q: Can ATP testing support immediate corrective action?

A: Yes. Because the system provides rapid quantitative results, it can support real-time hygiene decisions and corrective action when unacceptable residual contamination is detected.

Q: Is extensive operator training required to use the Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test?

A: The test is designed for simple operation with minimal operator training. Users should still follow their facility’s validated hygiene monitoring procedures and the applicable product instructions.

Q: Is the Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test intended for consumer use?

A: No. The product is intended for professional hygiene monitoring and is not intended for consumer use.

Q: What approval is associated with the Clean-Trace® Surface ATP Test?

A: The supplied product information identifies AOAC Performance Tested Method (PTM) certification #041901.
