Product Overview

Single-drop finger-stick collection with volumetric metering and integrated drying

The Capitainer®B10 is a volumetric dried blood spot card designed for accurate, at-home microsampling of whole blood via finger stick. A single drop of blood applied to the inlet is metered by the card's microfluidic technology to deliver a precisely defined 10 µl sample onto a pre-cut disc. An integrated paper-based drying pouch allows the collected sample to dry during transit, with no drying step required from the user.

The card is designed for healthcare providers, researchers, and laboratories that need to offer reliable, volume-accurate at-home sampling for a broad range of analytes. Where analyte-specific inhibition is required for PEth testing, see the Capitainer®B10Vanadate.

  • Sample volume: 2 × 10 µl whole blood, volumetric
  • Precision: CV < 5% SD < 0.5 µl

Key Features

  • Accurate: Automatically meters 2 × 10 µl of blood
  • Reliable: Design eliminates risk of over- or under-fill
  • Trusted: Integrated successful-sampling indicator
  • Protected sample: Sample enclosed and protected from contamination
  • User-friendly: Single drop of blood applied to the inlet

Volumetric DBS vs conventional dried blood spot cards

The limitation of conventional DBS

Dried blood spot sampling has been used since the 1960s, when it was introduced for newborn screening. A persistent limitation of conventional DBS cards is the lack of volumetric control: because blood viscosity varies with haematocrit (HCT), identical volumes of blood produce differently sized spots. A standardised sub-punch from a conventional card does not yield a consistent sample volume, restricting conventional DBS to qualitative or semiquantitative applications.

How Capitainer®B10 addresses this

The Capitainer®B10 uses microfluidic metering technology to deliver blood into a pre-cut disc at an exact, defined volume. Because the complete, volume-controlled disc is used for analysis, haematocrit-related variability is eliminated and the sample can support quantitative testing. Over 2 000 analyte methods have been published on conventional DBS; Capitainer's volumetric approach provides a route to converting these into quantitative assays.

Application Areas

  • Quantitative dried blood spot testing across a broad analyte range
  • Remote and at-home finger-stick blood collection without laboratory or phlebotomy infrastructure
  • Research studies requiring postal return of volumetrically defined blood samples
  • Applications requiring ambient-temperature transit of dried blood samples

Sampling and drying

A single drop of blood is applied to the inlet. The card automatically meters the correct volume; no additional steps are required from the user for collection.

The integrated paper-based drying pouch allows the collected sample to dry during transport. No separate drying step is required by the user.

The card must be used within 30 minutes of opening the package.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Capitainer®B10

Q: Is the Capitainer®B10 the same as the Capitainer®qDBS?

A: Yes. The Capitainer®B10 was formerly marketed as the Capitainer®qDBS. The product code and supplier remain the same; the name was updated by Capitainer.

Q: What is the difference between the Capitainer®B10 and the Capitainer®B10Vanadate?

A: The Capitainer®B10 and Capitainer®B10Vanadate share the same dimensions, paper grade, and volume (2 × 10 µl). The Capitainer®B10Vanadate additionally incorporates sodium metavanadate (NaVO3) into its paper disc to inhibit phospholipase D (PLD) activity, specifically preventing post-sampling PEth formation. The Capitainer®B10Vanadate is intended for PEth (alcohol biomarker) testing; the Capitainer®B10 is a general-purpose card without an integrated additive.

Q: What is the difference between the Capitainer®B10 and the Capitainer®B50?

A: The Capitainer®B50 collects a larger volume (2 × 50 µl) and is suited to applications where 10 µl is insufficient for the assay or detection method. The Capitainer®B10 uses a single drop applied at the inlet; the Capitainer®B50 accepts multiple drops until the metering channel fills.

Q: Does the sample need to be dried before posting?

A: No. The Capitainer®B10 includes an integrated paper-based drying pouch that allows the sample to dry during transit. No separate drying step is required from the user.

Q: How should collected samples be stored?

A: Collected samples may be stored at room temperature. Freezer storage extends analyte stability. Stability of specific analytes should be validated by the responsible laboratory.
